1442: Things just take longer (you’re not doing anything wrong)
If like me you often get frustrated by just how damn long things can take, then today I have a sassy and compassionate reminder for both of us.
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. So it is hump day and I have a sassy one for you because I want to pop in and remind you that things just take longer than we think they will do. It is shit. It is not something I particularly enjoy. Then maybe I can remember that it might not just be a me problem, I might not be as lazy as my dream shitter would like me to believe, and maybe it is just part and parcel of getting shit done. As we all know, around these parts we tend to be so fucking hard on ourselves and we are only ever a hop, skip and a jump away from finding fault in ourselves or blaming ourselves to something. But what if things just take longer than you think they do and that's just a life thing and not a you thing? As humans in general, not just you specific, we tend to be pretty wildly inaccurate when it comes to estimating the time something will take to be done. And there is also always more faff and bumpf to do.
We start doing one thing, it leads us to these five other things and these two bonus things we had no idea we needed to do. And before we know it we are miles away and hours away from where we started and where we thought we would be. Now don't get me wrong, I do not relish in this fact. It frustrates me to high heavens and beyond. But when I can remember that things just do take longer, and it's not that I'm lazy or I'm doing something wrong or I could have done it a different way, well then I can start to take the pressure off. I can still be frustrated, but I can be less frustrated at myself. A good strategy can be generally taking any amount of time you think something is going to take and timesing it by three and giving yourself that amount of time. And while up front that can seem pretty aggravating and really fucking annoying at best, it perhaps can give us a more realistic idea about what we can get done and also encourage us to be even more intentional.
Because if things take longer than we thought they would and we can't necessarily get through everything in a day, that can be a really helpful way of prioritising. So I am a million percent joining you in stamping my feet wholeheartedly about how long things can take, how seemingly little things can turn into absolute giant fuckers. But here's to getting annoyed at the thing rather than ourselves. Because if we looked at the facts, not what our inner dream shitter has to say, not what the wider world has to say about hustling and productivity, we would probably find that we are much further along than we think we are. So happy hump day. You are doing a fabulous job, whether you think you are or not. And I am sending you, as well as myself, a shitload of patience. I'll see you tomorrow.
