1259: Let’s focus on what we’re not gonna do

A lot of the time we focus on tooting our horns, acknowledging wins, and making intentional space over the weekend. But today we're looking ahead to the weekend with a different lens!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So sometimes on a Friday, we focus on what you're tooting your horn about and acknowledging your wins. Other times, we look at what you're gonna make intentional space for this weekend. But today, we're doing something differently because I want you to think of 3 things that you're not gonna do this weekend. It is so easy to get to the end of a week and think about the things that we didn't do and also feel hugely obligated to do so much shit that either we don't wanna do or doesn't really need to be done, or we simply get lost in the land of shoulds. So this weekend, I invite you to join the land of the coulds and also the land of the could nots. Like the old adage goes, for every yes you say, there's also a no. And the other way around is also true.

By saying no to things, you're also making space for other things as well. And just a reminder, in case you need to hear it, no is a full sentence. I know for those of us who are socialized as women, no is a loaded term. It's complicated. And often, we feel like we have to mold ourselves around other people and put everybody else first and keep ourselves small. But I say, fuck shrinking. Saying no does not make you a bitch. Listening to your own needs and identifying them and saying yes to them is an act of courage and is an act of rebellion.

And we love all things courageous rebellion around here. So have a think about the 3 things you're gonna say no to. And here's to daring to say yes to yourself. Have a good 1. I can't wait to be back in your ears on Monday morning or in your inbox on Sunday if you're part of my really lovely letters rebellion community. And if you're not, go find out more about it by heading to the rebelrousers.com/letters, and I would love to see you there. Take care and remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1257: What if it all works out?

If you’re anything like me, then you could get a gold medal in worrying, so today I’m flipping things on their head.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day. It is the last bucking Wednesday and hump day in January. And for today's daily pep, I really wanna lean into our creative superpower and lean into possibility. So I've shared before that I would easily get a gold medal in the Olympic sport that is worrying. Creativity is absolutely a superpower, but sometimes not for good. Sometimes our brain can just spiral with all the ways that things can go wrong, and we tend to use a hell of a lot of creativity and also mental gymnastics to get there. I don't know about you, but I can start off worrying about one thing.

And pretty much within 5 steps, I have predicted the downfall of my entire life and everybody around me, And it's actually pretty damn impressive. But here's the thing. If we can have that level of creativity when it comes to predicting all the ways things could go wrong and all the ways that we can make a tit of ourselves if we did what we really wanted to do. A, we've got a pretty epic creative muscle. And b, we can use that for the other side of things. Because what if things actually go okay? What if they go better than okay? I've had a lot on my mind this past month, and my word of the year is discomfort. And I have been really trying to tend to my nervous system and remind myself and dig deep into that inner faith that things will be okay. And coming out of January, things genuinely feel like they're gonna be okay.

And I think it has only been in even wondering whether there's a flip side of the catastrophe coin that has helped. And also reminding myself that things do tend to work out in one way or another in the end because they kind of have to. So if you're feeling a bit wobbly, if your creative brain is going wild with all the ways that all the things can go wrong, Listen to, dive into, and trust that inner voice and ask that question, what if it actually turns out okay? And on that note, I wanna give a quick shameless plug to something I created last year, which is really good at helping you tap into your inner wisdom. I did this mini course or mini retreat which is all about how to even hear that voice in the first place, how to harness it, and how to use it when your inner dream shutter is being extra loud. It's really helpful. It will give you an extra boost and I know that I've so long struggled to hear the voice of my inner wisdom and I'm sharing everything that really helped me. So if you wanna learn more, you can do just that by going to the rebel rousers.com/innerwisdom. And I really hope it helps.

So have a good one, happy Wednesday, and remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1255: Let’s just get it done

To round off the last Monday of this sluggish January, I have a compassionate challenge for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So I don't know about you, but thank fuck it it's the January,. I know I joke every year that January feels like it's got a thousand days in it at least. But my goodness, this 1 has been a fucker. If you are feeling like shit is just not going to plan, if you feel overwhelmed by all the things you have to do, and if thus far it is not feeling like a new year, then you are in excellent company. I'm finding for myself and also near enough everybody I work with and loved ones and family that Jan. 0 has just been sluggish at best.

So it is not a you thing. It seems to be a collective community thing. Now for me, the January, always has 2 really fun things in it. There's the tax bill, and there's also the car MOT. And I can't tell you how much I have been avoiding dealing with both of them this month. I know they've been coming up, but I've just been putting my head in the sand. And today, as I finally scheduled the MOT and filed my self assessment and got started on the tax stuff, I realized something for about the millionth time in my life. And that is it's never usually as bad as we think it's gonna be.

And, also, often, we don't know the weight of holding something until we no longer have that weight. Our creative brains are fabulous at coming up with all the ways that things could go wrong and convincing us just how hellish it might be. And sometimes, yes, unfortunately, that is true. But for the most part, these things, especially the life admin maintenance bullshit, goes better than we expected, isn't quite as hard, and it is such a weight off our shoulders to get done. So for today's episode, my compassionate challenge for you is to look at the thing that you've been pretending doesn't exist and take the first step. Chances are your dream shooter has made it into a way bigger thing than it actually is. And I don't know about you, but even if something doesn't turn out to be great, more information or actually seeing what the score is lets me know where to start. And I know for me, anyway, more information is more power.

I also give you full permission to get it done however you need to get it done. Bribe yourself. Give yourself juicy rewards. Make it into a shit sandwich and do something nice beforehand and nice afterwards. And if you're feeling bold and brave, just do the thing. And here's my reflections after doing those 2 things that I have been vehemently putting off. While I am not going into this week with absolutely no overwhelm, I feel so much better. I can think a bit more clearly.

The fact that they aren't in my head nagging them is just, to be honest, bloody lovely. And I've also given myself a bit of a boost by putting my brave girl pants on. So go take some of that weight off your shoulders. Know that we all have things that we're putting somewhere just out of sight so we can't see them, but are also nagging us like hell. And above all, try not to shit on yourself. It's okay that you haven't done it until now. It's okay that you put it off. It doesn't matter what the reasons are.

You're doing it now, and you can do it. So go do the thing, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1252: Surround yourself with your people

Today I’ve got a bit of a twist on something we all need, but can be hard to find.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Wednesday and a very happy hump day to you. So it's fair to say around here, we tend to sometimes feel like square pegs in round holes. Sometimes it can feel like even our most well intentioned loved ones simply don't get us, and that can be a really lonely feeling. As we're carving out our place in the world and trying to figure out what we wanna do with our one wild and precious life, it can sometimes feel like we're swimming against the tide. So for today's daily prep, I really want to encourage you to surround yourself with people who get it and who get you. That might look like texting a friend who you always have a really good laugh with and who just gets it. It could be actually going to that community thing that you've been wanting to try out.

And if there's nobody that comes to mind in real life, remember there are other helpful ways to surround yourself with people who get it too. This month, I'm celebrating 10 years of working for myself. And for me, one thing that was absolutely instrumental was finding people who were also doing things differently and had similar dreams to mine even if I didn't know them. And I didn't really know them in real life. But I'm telling you, spending time seeking out podcasts where guests were building a life they love in a completely unconventional way that I wasn't seeing around me really made a massive difference. It checked this weird and wonderful thing that I wanted to do that I didn't know if I could do and made it into something normal and achievable. And knowing it was possible in the first place was more than half the battle. I think for so many of us, we get sick of all this advice about finding your own people and surrounding yourself with like minded people when we don't necessarily know them.

But I'm telling you, you don't have to know those people personally. You can look to writers you admire. You can look to books. You can look to films. We are creative, and we get to use our creativity. So if you're feeling like a square peg in a round hole and you wanna feel a bit more understood or you wanna feel like you're not the only one, really intentionally seek out that inspiration because it really is out there. So that is my encouragement for you today. As I mentioned, it is my 10 year anniversary of working for myself.

And to celebrate, I'm doing a buy 1 get 1 free on my brain huddles. So if you wanna get together, just you and me, and really shoot the shit and find a shitload of clarity, some momentum, direction with actual tangible ways to get there. This is my absolute jam, and it is amazing what we can do in 90 minutes. This offer is going away tomorrow. So if you've been thinking about it, now is the time to book. And you can do just that by going to the rebelrouses.com/brain-huddle, and that's also in the show notes. You can click the link there as well. Finally, one of the massive privileges I get hosting this podcast is I get to see the download numbers, and I get to see just how many people there are like us in the world.

So know that as you listen to this, whether you're lying in bed, whether you're putting the kettle on, whether you're making the bed, whether you're commuting, or whether you're listening to a shitload of episodes in one day to try and get some pep in your step. Know that you truly aren't alone. There are many of us, and you've got this. I'll see you tomorrow.

1251: Celebrate your own milestones

We're all too quick to celebrate other people's successes, but how often do we celebrate, or commemorate our own? In today's Daily Pep, I'm sharing a huge milestone in my own life, and I have a fabulous offer for you as well!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So this month, I'm celebrating something exciting. Because it is my 10 year anniversary of working for myself. It is 10 years since I left a job that absolutely sucked the soul out of me and left me feeling like a shell of a person. And it's been 10 years since I really bettered on myself, which, honestly, I can't tell you how much courage it took, but also how it truly didn't feel like courage at the time. So for today's daily pep, I wanna share with you three things. The first is that to celebrate my 10 year anniversary, I've got until Thursday a buy 1, get 1 free offer on my brain huddles, which are my 1 to 1 coaching sessions. Now in 90 minutes, we can work so much magic together.

They are great for getting unstuck. They're great for developing project ideas, business ideas, all that good stuff. They're great for figuring out fun ways to make your life work for you, and I'm always amazed just how much shit we get done and get through in those sessions. So if you've ever fancy working 1 to 1 with me, now is the time because you book 1 and you get 1 free, which is also a really good way of having some added accountability, and we can really put a plan together and tweak it as we go. You can find out more and book yours by going to the rebel rousers.comforward/braindashhuddl, or click the link in the show notes. Now the second thing is very much related to the first thing in terms of you get to celebrate your own milestones. So much of life is really about celebrating other people's stuff. Around here, we tend to be seriously thoughtful gift givers.

We tend to love celebrating other people, yet our own achievements can often go unnoticed. And I am a huge fan of celebrating the anniversary of making really brave decisions. So as I'm celebrating my time that I've worked for myself, I want you to think of what you can celebrate for yourself. Put it on the calendar, make a special day of it every year, and celebrate your own damn self. And the final thing I wanna share with you today is that you get to bet on yourself even if not especially when you don't know all the answers, you don't know how it's gonna work out, but it's something you know you have to do. Or it's a situation you know that really doesn't serve you. It's okay that you've not got everything figured out. Often, we have to act before we're ready.

And really trust your gut. I knew on day 1/day 2 of the last job I ever worked that it absolutely wasn't for me. And while part of me really wishes I'd have listened and just walked or found an alternative so I could get out of there as soon as possible, There's a very big part of me that is so glad that I took the route I did because it landed me here, and I'm pretty damn fucking happy with what I do. Which is to say, try not to judge yourself. Give yourself the love that you would give a friend and know that it is okay to make decisions solely for yourself. So, happy Tuesday, my darlings. Here's to celebrating the shit out of all the brave things you've done. And here's to hope, here's to possibility, and here's to your future. I'll see you tomorrow.

1250: Hope in dark times

Sometimes it feels like the world is going to hell in a handbasket, so today’s Daily Pep! is a message of rebellious hope.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Monday to you. So, today feels like a really good day to talk about rebellious hope. It often feels like the world is going to hell in a handbasket. And I don't know about you, but I often struggle with clinging on to any semblance of hope and also feeling pretty powerless. But one of the things I keep returning back to is the fact that having hope is a rebellious act because it takes courage to imagine better and believe in better and courage to imagine a brighter future when the future doesn't look too shiny. Hope is also rebellious because too many people benefit from our despair. And while despair is a very, very valid reaction to so much going on in the world right now, it also really robs us of our one wild and precious life and robs us of our power.

And that always makes me think of the Anita Roddick quote where she says, if you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room. So for today's daily pep, I want to give you some rebellious hope. And on Martin Luther King Junior Day, I wanted to do that through his words. So here are 3 of his quotes to help you get through this day and also the brighter and possibly darker days ahead. Firstly, darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.

And secondly, no person has the right to reign on your dreams. And thirdly, and maybe most pertinent of all, we shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. So here's to knowing you're not alone. Here's to brighter days ahead. And here's to holding on to rebellious hope, even when it feels really hard. Because that is possibly the most important time of all.

1249: Happy f*ck it Friday!

Today I'm sharing one of my favourite two word phrases that's applicable to almost any situation! Have a happy f*ck it Friday!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, jelly peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So if you have had a long week, if you are fresh out of fucks, or you've been out of fucks for a good long while now, if you're feeling a bit knackered, or on the other hand that you're feeling pretty inspired and raring to go, I invite you to have a fuck it Friday. Fuck it is one of my favorite phrases because it can be used for everything. When we're exhausted, we can say, fuck it. I've done enough, and I'm looking after myself. And when we're feeling brave, we can say, fuck it, and just go for it. It works for many moods, and it tends to be a pretty good way of identifying our needs in the moment, listening to them, and honoring them. So however this Friday finds you, I invite you to say a good, healthy fuck it.

That could look like scrapping something on your to do list that has been haunting you for months that realistically isn't gonna get done and you just need to let go of. It could be putting yourself out there, asking a hard question, and just seeing what happens. And it can also just look like saying fuck it. Let's see where the weekend takes me, and let's just meet myself where I'm at. So a very happy fuck it Friday to you. Whatever your fuck it looks like, remember, there is no right way to do this. And whether your fuck it is an exasperated one, a joyful one, or a terrified one. Know that right here today, you are enough just as you are.

You do have your own back, and everything changes when you believe you matter. And fuck it is a great part of that philosophy. So have a good one. I hope you find some unexpected joy this weekend, and I can't wait to be back with you as always on Monday morning or in your inbox on Sunday, where I send a letter out to my fabulous Rebel email community. If you fancy joining us, you can do just that by going to the rebel rouses.com/letters, and I'd love to see you there. Take care.

1246: Embracing seasonal productivity

Traditional productivity advice doesn't tend to work for us rebels, so today I'm sharing a much more powerful alternative that works WITH our human-ness, rather than against it!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. So this week on the daily pack, we're really focusing on compassionate productivity and really looking at different ways to get shit done that doesn't involve treating ourselves like shit. Because there is so much out there which is supposed to help us really tick things off the to do list and get shit done, that just doesn't work for us or goes against how we naturally tend to work. I get so sick of all these systems that treat you like you're supposed to be some kind of robot and that don't take into account fluctuating energy and moods. And also simply just doesn't take into account the fact that we are humans. We have different contexts, and different things are important to us at different times. And that's why I really love seasonal productivity.

And in particular for me, working 100 day chunks. Because a 100 days is seriously enough time to prove to yourself that you can do stuff and to really make significant progress and show up for yourself. But it is also short enough that it doesn't feel like a cage and you've got a lot of flexibility. For me, and I know for so many of the people I have the privilege of working with, a 100 day containers really give us the freedom back. And, also, they're a way of bringing back possibility and inspiration into the mix as well. By breaking things down into a 100 day chunks, we can really figure out what our theme is, what season of life we're in, and how we're able to show up for it. And it's almost like having 3 years in 1 year. All of this is to say that if you do not feel like you're in your most productive season right now, that is okay, and it's also probably to be expected.

We are in the 10000 days of January. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, we're supposed to be hibernating. And I know a lot of people aren't really feeling this year yet, and you're allowed to meet yourself where you're at. What I'm gonna be recommending to everybody who joins a 100 days of compassionate productivity is really focusing those first 50 days around the tiny but really powerful changes that really make a difference to your daily life. And then heading into the second 50 days when spring is here to get really stuck in when we're probably gonna be feeling a lot more inspired and also more human. So if you'd like to join, you can find out more by heading to therebelrousers.com/100days. The link is also in the show notes. And remember that you get to take back the power.

You can start afresh a 100 days whenever you want to. You get to treat yourself like the fabulous human you are. And doing things with compassion is not fluffy, but rather it is seriously fucking strategic and very effective. Here's to getting shit done with more joy, ease and compassion. I'll see you tomorrow.

There are 2 versions to choose from, a DIY version and a live community round, and I think it'll be right up your street. And for today's episode, I really want to speak to and emphasize the importance of one of my 4 key tenets of compassionate productivity, which is imperfect action is so much better than perfect inaction.

There is often no right or correct way to start. Now this might not be true if you're performing surgery or you're an engineer. But for most projects, it is all too easy to get caught up in thinking that we have to start at the exact right place or we have to have the exact right tool or have done the exact amount of research. Those three things are gonna keep us really stuck. They're gonna keep us believing that there is one right way to do things. And most of all, they're gonna have you believing that you're not enough or you don't have enough or you don't know enough to begin with. And I call absolute fucking bullshit on that. You might not have the perfect or the ideal setup.

You might wish you knew a bit more and you might not feel ready, but that might just give you a creative edge that nobody else has. You're naturally gonna find different ways to do things, and you know so much already. You are not starting with a blank page. You have so many experiences, skills, pieces of inner wisdom, and knowledge to draw from. I have spent many, many hours, days, months, and years stuck in perfect inaction, and I would not recommend it to anybody. Life is too short. Sometimes we just have to say fuck it and start where we are. One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received is start before you're ready, and I really share that with you today.

So here's to taking imperfect action, knowing that perfect action doesn't even exist in the first place, And also, here's to rebelling against the idea that there's one way to do things and one way to live life, and doing things on our own damn terms. I'll see you tomorrow.

1244: What assumptions are you making?

To wrap up this week, we're diving into our (often unconscious) assumptions and what we are and what we aren't allowed to have, and giving ourselves permission!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So, earlier this week we were talking about a word of the year. And today's daily prep is inspired by a word that I chose for 2 years running, that I've actually decided to adapt as a word for my life. And it is experiment. And the reason I'm sharing this with you today is because I was thinking about all the massive assumptions that you make about our lives. I think most of us wish we have more time and more energy. But when we think of ways to create more of those things, we often dismiss our own ideas because we assume they're not gonna work, and we tend to write them off before we even begin. Our brains love problem solving, and often we think back to times when we've tried to solve it in the past, and maybe it hasn't worked.

And our built in confirmation bias and our built in negativity bias leads us to believe that we're just not gonna be able to solve the problem. So as we wrap up this week, I really invite you to think about the different assumptions you're making in your own life. When you look at the grand picture of your life and what's missing or what you desire, as you start to think about the things that maybe possibly could change that, try and think about what assumptions you're automatically jumping to without consciously knowing it. Or, and this is going a bit deeper, think about the things that you think you aren't allowed to change or the things that you feel guilty about wanting or not wanting, and the things that you just assume aren't in the cards for you. I'm making some changes with my business, whereby I'm getting really strategic about managing my energy. And while it's really uncomfortable, I'm really daring to put my needs more on the table. And what I didn't realize is that I've been operating with a shitload of assumptions that I've never really challenged. But sometimes the person we most need to seek permission from is ourselves, And I've made some changes.

They are very small tweaks, but they've helped me reclaim a lot of my time and energy. And the world truly hasn't ended. And to be honest, I would have made them before now had I even realized it was possible or if I'd have started challenging my assumptions earlier. So this is something to think about as you go into the weekend. What are things that you've kind of unconsciously decided you don't have permission to do? What are maybe some assumptions that you see as really black and white that might actually be holding you back? And if you do or take nothing else from this episode, ask yourself this. What do you need to give yourself permission for? And just get quiet and listen for the answer. And remember, there is no wrong answer. You know yourself better than you think you do, and just get curious.

So happy thinking. Happy Friday. It is wonderful to be back with you. And I can't wait to see you back here bright and early as always on Monday morning with a new episode of the daily pep. Or in your inbox on Sunday, if you're part of my letters of rebellion email community. 1242: A counter-intuitive way to build a life you love

In today's episode, I'm sharing an exercise that's really helpful if you struggle to verbalise what you want and where you want to go!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, daily peppers, and a very happy Wednesday, and a very happy hump day to you. A quick reminder before we get going that today is the day of my word of the year workshop. So if you would love an evening of inspiration, connection and clarity and to find your own personal compass for 2025, I would love to see you there. To find out more and book your spot head over to the links in the show notes and you can book your spot by going to the rebelrousers.com/wordoftheyear 2025. Now on to today's show. So around here we are all about building a life that we love. But I don't know about you, sometimes that can feel a bit intimidating. And sometimes it can be really hard to find out exactly what we want.

Our wants are usually buried under a lot of people's expectations, a lot of the things that we think we should want. And if we've been socialized as women, chances are we've pretty much been socialized to put ourselves last. So it's no wonder that asking ourselves what we want can be a loaded and a tricky question. So as we're starting to think about the year ahead and what we want, my recommendation is to start with what you don't want. Enormous power and enormous clarity can be found in reverse engineering because chances are it's easier to identify exactly what we don't want. And that can be a really, really good jumping off point. And if you wanna take this a step further, I've heard about people doing anti vision boards, which I think is really fun. And often in a funny way, it can actually be more helpful to figure out precisely what you don't want because that says so much about you.

And if you flip it, that gives you some really good clues on what is actually important to you and what might be a priority. It might also help you come up with things that you've not even considered. And for me, that's when shit gets exciting. So as you do and you're reflecting about this year and about life in general and building a life you love, while it sounds completely contradictory, start with imagining building a life you don't love and work backwards from there. And a quick permission slip before we wrap up in case you need it. It is okay to not want things and it is okay to not want the things that you think you should want or not want the things that everybody else seems to want. It only has to make sense to you. So have a think.

Have a good one. I will see you back here bright and early tomorrow morning or with you on Zoom this evening. And as always, remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
